HAPPY NEW YEARS!

THERE IS A BETTER WAY

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

After much thought, I have decided to run for Alderman of the 2nd Ward.  On November 22, I submitted several times more petition signatures than what I needed to get on the ballot.  I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the 50 plus volunteers who helped me with getting signatures and in other ways big and small.  Our efforts were a success, and since I am not being challenged, I will definitely appear on the ballot when you go to vote on February 22, 2011.  The other City of Chicago positions such as mayor, treasurer and clerk will also be on the ballot.  The campaign has now begun.

I would like to take this opportunity to ask for your help and support.

The reasons as to why I have decided to run for Alderman of the 2nd Ward are numerous, but they all come down to five words:  There Is A Better Way!  There is a better way to do things, and there is a better way to run a ward.  Those of you who have seen my work up close already know how I do things and what I have accomplished.  Whether it regards advocating for solutions to condo, school or development issues, or simply keeping the community informed via my newsletter, you my readers already know how I would approach the public trust of being an alderman.  I would do so with the same inclusive (consensus-based) leadership that I have used thus far.

As we look at the challenges that the 2nd Ward faces, and indeed those that Chicago faces as well, the next Alderman of the 2nd Ward will need to be someone who can bring people together to solve very real and pressing problems.  Whether it is condo turnover issues or the lack of jobs in many areas of the ward, or whether it is school overcrowding or a lack of school choice, or whether it is an uncertain business, regulatory or zoning environment, or whether it is rising crime or the lack of quality affordable retail stores, or whether it is a city budget with multi-hundred million dollar deficits or an inequitable distribution of TIF resources, or whether it is simply a belief that your concerns are not being listened to or responded to, the next alderman is going to need to bring all parties together, put all options on the table, have an open mind, and do the hard work of solving these problems.

So once again, I would like to ask for your help and support.

With almost 40,000 registered voters in the 2nd Ward, there is much work for me to do to reach as many of these voters as possible between now and February 22.  In the coming weeks, I will be having or participating in fundraisers, meet and greets, coffees, candidate forums, media interviews, email blasts, direct outreach efforts such as phone calls and knocking on doors in all parts of the ward, and possibly a few other nice surprises.  My wish is to get my message out there that “There Is A Better Way!

While much of what my campaign has accomplished so far has been through volunteers or through free media, a campaign of this magnitude will require substantial financial resources to run successfully.  If you would like to donate to my campaign, please visit my web site at www.EnriqueForAlderman.com

Will make decision on Mayor’s race at a later date
CHICAGO – The Chicago Federation of Labor (CFL) today endorsed men and women for the Chicago Treasurer, Clerk and City Council in the February 22, 2011 Municipal Election who have demonstrated strong support for working people through their records as elected officials, work in the community or responses to questions posed to them by the largest labor body in Chicago and Cook County.
In the race for Mayor, the delegates to the CFL political education committee voted to defer a recommendation until a future date.  Earlier in the day, the members of the Executive Board interviewed candidates for mayor seeking the endorsement.
“We had a good discussion with many of the candidates about the complex issues facing the city, including the budget crisis, our public schools, job creation and economic development, and the unfunded pension liability, to name a few,” said Jorge Ramirez, President of the Chicago Federation of Labor.  “The members of our Executive Board decided they needed more time to evaluate the candidates before making a decision.”
The affiliated unions of the CFL had previously agreed to remain neutral until a collective decision could be made.  With the exception of a few organizations, the broader labor movement will remain united in seeking a consensus choice for Mayor.
The City Council will be more independent under the next mayor than it has in the past.  After electing several new aldermen in the 2007 municipal election, the CFL and its affiliates will work hard to protect its allies and pick up some seats in open contests.
“Historically, organized labor has been able to communicate with union members and get them to the polls on Election Day in greater numbers than any other group,” said Robert G. Reiter, Jr., Secretary-Treasurer.  “This upcoming election will be no different.  Our members will work to support these candidates because of the difference they will make for working families in Chicago.”
“With more than 300,000 union households in the City of Chicago, organized labor has a lot at stake in this election,” said Ramirez.  “Union members are important members of our communities and they care dearly about the future of this city.  They are excited to play an active role in shaping that future.”
