Our present & future (Children)

Click to view this email in a browser

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Inter-American Family and Friends,

In 1975, two young mothers imagined a world where children from varied backgrounds would be taught in English and Spanish in an atmosphere of cultural pride.

Nearly 35 years later, Inter-American is still advancing the cause of multilingual, multicultural education, but it is not easy! We start each school year with fewer resources and more challenges. In the past decade, due to budgetary constraints, we have lost six staff positions alone. This and other setbacks make it increasingly difficult to maintain small class sizes, address individual student needs, promote teacher collaboration, offer recess, arts and academic enrichment, and support social and emotional services for our students in need.

For the 2009-10 school year, Inter-American is suffering from a short-fall in funding. Income from some of our primary sources are in significant decline. For example, the school has lost $13,000 per month in revenue since the parking lot closed for construction last January. This is a total revenue loss of $156,000 over the past 12 months. Therefore, as parents whose children benefit from this very unique institution, we have a personal stake and responsibility to ensure that we make every effort to meet the needs of our children.

No amount is too small! Consider what your donation could support:
⋅ $3.00 buys a journal and pencil set for a writing workshop;
⋅ $16.00 purchases a book to build a classroom library of authentic Spanish literature;
⋅ $34.00 funds an hour of after school enrichment class for a group of students;
⋅ $63.00 facilitates two staff members to supervise daily recess;
⋅ $142.00 provides a day of teacher collaboration, research and curriculum development;
⋅ $1,500.00 supports professional development training for all teaching staff.

Consider this and give. Give what you can so that our school can be a model of equitable multilingual, multicultural education. Your time and talent is a tremendous support to Inter-American. If you have not already done so, please let your teacher or the office know you would like to volunteer. And, if you know someone else who would also like to give, please pass this letter on to them. Donating is easy. Please visit the school’s website at www.iamschicago.com to make a donation or write a check to IAMS, and send it to 851 W. Waveland, Chicago, IL 60613 attn: Year-End Fund. Contributions are tax deductible. And if your employer matches funds, let us know. It is a wonderful way to double, or even triple your generosity.

Another option for this fast approaching Holiday Season is to use one of the on-line malls for your holiday shopping at either www.goodsearch.com or www.escrip.com. To use Goodsearch, list “Inter American Magnet School” as your charity on the first page of the website, then hit the “shop now” button in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. To use Escrip, register your credit card on the website (the identification code for Inter-American is 500017570), then simply hit the line “At the Online Mall” in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. With either of these websites, you can shop at national stores such as Target, Amazon, Eddie Bauer or LandsEnd and a percentage of your purchase, up to as much as 10%, will be contributed to our school. Last, but not least, if you have a Target credit card, you can register your card at www.target.com/tcoe (the school’s identification code is 45841) and Target will contribute money to our school with each of your future purchases.

We realize this is a difficult year to ask for help, but in all our history, this is the first time a year-end request for financial support has been made. Your participation and partnership are vital. Together, we can fulfill our promise to achieve academic bi-literacy in Spanish and English within a culturally rich learning environment of excellence. Support Inter-American Magnet School and allow it to become an even brighter beacon of great public education while continuing to enrich the lives of our children. Thank you.

Burr Oak Cemetery civil suit seeks closure
by Wendell Hutson

A lawsuit filed on behalf of 400 Black plaintiffs is seeking to reopen the scandalplagued Burr Oak Cemetery.

The suit filed in July but amended Oct. 2 in Cook County Circuit Court against Perpetua Inc., parent owner of Burr Oak, also seeks to have evidence maintained and unspecified monetary damages, which will be determined by a jury. The suit names seven other Perpetua subsidiaries and two Perpetua executives, Melvin Bryant and Felix Villalba, as defendants in the suit.

Bryant, CEO of Perpetua, did not return phones calls seeking comment.

For now, class-action status for the lawsuit has been put on hold in light of Perpetua filing bankruptcy. And while the suit is moving forward, Deidre Baumann, whose law firm Baumann & Shuldiner is representing the plaintiffs, said she expects it to eventually be given class-action status.

“I am looking for others to join the suit as time goes on. What happened at Burr Oak has affected families all across America, so this incident is not restricted to Chicago,” she said. “We would like to see the cemetery reopen this year. Families are hurting and need closure and for many of them it is visiting the gravesite where loved ones are buried.”

She added that Horwitz, Richardson & Baker LLC law firm is also representing a bulk of the plaintiffs. Seven other law firms are also involved in the suit.

Individuals wanting to become part of the suit must do so through a law firm of their choice.

Kenyan Foster, 56, could be the next plaintiff to join the suit. He buried his mother at Burr Oak in 1982 and said he is now deciding whether to join the suit.

“All I know is that her body has not been found and I know it’s there,” Foster told the Defender. “I visited her gravesite each year on her birthday, Memorial Day and Mother’s Day. Maybe this lawsuit could bring closure for me.”

Recently, attorneys representing the plaintiffs were granted access to the cemetery after filing a motion in court early in the month ago. Additionally, the suit is seeking that Perpetua Inc. maintain the upkeep of the cemetery, something Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said was not done.

However, a U.S. Bankruptcy judge limited their inspection to video taping only and they were prohibited from touching or moving any objects, questioning the staff and obtaining other information.

The suit alleges that not only are headstones missing but so are caskets and bodies that were originally interred by Burr Oak employees.

Jacqueline Renee Benson, an infant, was born May 26, 1968 and died Sept. 20, 1969, according to the suit. Four days later she was buried in the Babyland section at Burr Oak. The section is called Babyland because that is where small children were buried. The body, casket or headstone for Benson is now missing and Burr Oak employees have been unable to locate her remains.

And the suit also accuses Perpetua of seven counts of misconduct including breach of contract, negligent supervision and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Perpetua filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September. By doing so legal experts said it diminishes the likelihood that plaintiffs would be able to collect a huge monetary award. It also gave Perpetua the legal authority to regain daily management at Burr Oak, which had been run by a court-appointed receiver since July.

Baumann added that she is not worried about not receiving any monetary relief because only three Perpetua corporations have filed for bankruptcy.

“We originally filed the suit before Perpetua filed for bankruptcy relief and there are company executives and other subsidiaries that could be found liable and ordered to pay damages,” she said.

The four Burr Oak employees facing criminal charges in the case are now out on bail. The final defendant, cemetery manager Carolyn Towns, was released last week after posting $25,000 cash bond.

Pilsen giving more Amore

Nov

24That’s Amore: Pilsen shows its love for Italian cuisine
Written by: Harry Backlund Add comments “Ten thousand Mexican restaurants in Pilsen. Let’s do some Italian.” Listen to chef Cesar Pineda and it’s clear that he opened his new restaurant with every intention of bringing something unique and exciting to the neighborhood. He did. Ciao Amore opened last July under a cheery red sign facing out onto West 18th Street. Inside the atmosphere is bright and airy, with wooden floors and colorful touches in the decoration and the artwork that lines the walls. The food is exceptional and its honest personal touches set it apart.
The menu is full of classic Italian meat and fish dishes, antipasti, and a mix-and-match of pasta and sauces, both made in-house. We started with a salad of blanched green beans, tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and a bold amount of fresh minced garlic, covered in olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Next was chicken breast, perfectly moist and doused in a rich and dark porcini mushroom cream sauce, and house-made ricotta-stuffed ravioli—one of the chef’s favorites, and unanimously one of ours, too.

Pineda takes a lot of pride in his gnocchi, and he should—they’re so smooth it’s hard to tell where the potato stops and the asiago pesto stuffing begins. The gnocchi would be good with anything, but we tried it with the arrabbiata sauce, which beautifully highlights the usual combination of red pepper, eggplant, and onion with the addition of jalapeño peppers. The day’s special of tricolor tortellini stuffed with mascarpone cheese was a little inconsistent in texture, and the good cream sauce with ham and peas tasted plain alongside the other sauces, but the worst we could possibly call it is “the least exciting part.”

We couldn’t finish a huge plate full of calamari, shrimp, maki, clams, and mussels in a spicy marinara sauce, but not because we didn’t want to. The seafood was fresh and the flavors were robust and balanced. We did have room for dessert, though: The menu is limited, but the house-made tiramisu is outstanding and gets a lot of complexity from a layer of coffee grounds.

Ciao Amore is an upscale establishment, but for the quality of its food the value is exceptional. Generously portioned pastas and entrees range from $15 to $22, and the restaurant is always BYOB with no corkage fee. Service was flawless: our waiter was on top of everything, thoroughly knowledgeable about the food and clearly possessing a personal connection to the restaurant.

Finding this kind of serious Italian cuisine in Pilsen might sound like a contradiction. It’s not. Ciao Amore reflects as much of Pilsen’s complex and vibrant character as the panaderías and taquerías that line the streets around it. Every staff member I talked to lived in the neighborhood and all of them called the chef by his first name. Even the art on the walls is as local as it gets: Pineda himself painted many of the abstract and colorful pieces that line the walls, and several more are creations of another cook, Frank Diaz. There are plans to bring in more pieces from local Latino art collective Mestizarte. Pineda has lived in the neighborhood for three years and his love for the area is evident. “This is the garden of the downtown area,” he says. “And why work so hard to bring outsiders to Pilsen when the talent, and the people, are all right here?” On a Saturday night there are a few tables of yuppies sampling dishes, a middle-aged couple dining on simple pasta with red sauce and probably celebrating an anniversary, an elderly Hispanic couple, and an apparent regular sitting solo at the front window table reading a paper. Pineda periodically comes out of the kitchen and moves from table to table, explaining his dishes and animating his customers with gentle shouts of “Mangia! Mangia!” (”Eat! Eat!”)

Part Italian and part Venezuelan, Pineda’s culinary influences go back to childhood. He learned the Italian classics from his mother, but there are plans to include Venezuelan items on the menu. With the closing of the North Side’s Caracas Grill there are currently no Venezuelan restaurants in Chicago, and that’s a gap Pineda would like to fill. One way or another, the menu will be changing soon. “There’s too much up here, it has to come out,” Pineda says laughing and rubbing his head with both hands.

Ciao Amore can compete with the best Italian cuisine in Chicago, and at the same time its local commitment means it doesn’t really need to. The neighborhood connections here are as rich and complex as the flavors on the menu, but the love of food that holds them together is simple. “We are here to stay. We are here to make good food, because…” Pineda smiles and pats his belly. “I love to eat.”

We need your help!

Hi everyone - I'm helping some of my college friends advertise a bone marrow drive that they are conducting for their son. He was recently diagnosed with aplastic anemia - a disease which prevents his body from producing enough new blood cells. Treatments for aplastic anemia include medications, blood transfusions, & a bone marrow transplant. Naturally, the transplant can occur only if a match is available. This drive will hopefully improve his chances of finding a match. Although they are especially looking for Latino donors in this drive, donors of all ethnicities are needed and could help save a life. If you are interested, there are two ways you can help: 1) Become a donor: If you think you might consider becoming a bone marrow donor, then please see the attached flyer for details on their drive. You can join the donor registry online with a few simple steps. The website referenced in the flyer (www.bethematch.org) also contains a lot of good information about the process for donating. 2) Circulate the flyer: If you are comfortable posting this flyer anywhere such as a church, community center, etc., please feel free to do so. Additionally, you can email it to anyone else who you think might be interested in helping. Please feel free to call or email me if you have any questions. Thanks so much. Kate

Kate

AP – Speaker Nancy Pelosi, center, is joined by (L-R) House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Rep. George Miller, …
By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent David Espo, Ap Special Correspondent – 7 mins ago
WASHINGTON – In a victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed landmark health care legislation Saturday night to expand coverage to tens of millions who lack it and place tough new restrictions on the insurance industry. Republican opposition was nearly unanimous.
The 220-215 vote cleared the way for the Senate to begin a long-delayed debate on the issue that has come to overshadow all others in Congress.
A triumphant Speaker Nancy Pelosi likened the legislation to the passage of Social Security in 1935 and Medicare 30 years later — and Obama issued a statement saying, "I look forward to signing it into law by the end of the year."
"It provides coverage for 96 percent of Americans. It offers everyone, regardless of health or income, the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will have access to affordable health care when they need it," said Rep. John Dingell, the 83-year-old Michigan lawmaker who has introduced national health insurance in every Congress since succeeding his father in 1955.
In the run-up to a final vote, conservatives from the two political parties joined forces to impose tough new restrictions on abortion coverage in insurance policies to be sold to many individuals and small groups. They prevailed on a roll call of 240-194.
Ironically, that only solidified support for the legislation, clearing the way for conservative Democrats to vote for it.
The legislation would require most Americans to carry insurance and provide federal subsidies to those who otherwise could not afford it. Large companies would have to offer coverage to their employees. Both consumers and companies would be slapped with penalties if they defied the government's mandates.
Insurance industry practices such as denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions would be banned, and insurers would no longer be able to charge higher premiums on the basis of gender or medical history. In a further slap, the industry would lose its exemption from federal antitrust restrictions on price fixing and market allocation.
At its core, the measure would create a federally regulated marketplace where consumers could shop for coverage. In the bill's most controversial provision, the government would sell insurance, although the Congressional Budget Office forecasts that premiums for it would be more expensive than for policies sold by private firms.
A cheer went up from the Democratic side of the House when the bill gained 218 votes, a majority. Moments later, Democrats counted down the final seconds of the voting period in unison, and let loose an even louder roar when Pelosi grabbed the gavel and declared, "the bill is passed."
The bill drew the votes of 219 Democrats and Rep. Joseph Cao, a first-term Republican who holds an overwhelmingly Democratic seat in New Orleans. Opposed were 176 Republicans and 39 Democrats.
From the Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada issued a statement saying, "We realize the strong will for reform that exists, and we are energized that we stand closer than ever to reforming our broken health insurance system."
In his written statement, Obama praised the House's action and said, "now the United State Senate must follow suit and pass its version of the legislation. I am absolutely confident it will."
Nearly unanimous in their opposition, minority Republicans cataloged their objections across hours of debate on the 1,990-page, $1.2 trillion legislation.
United in opposition, minority Republicans cataloged their objections across hours of debate on the 1,990-page, $1.2 trillion legislation.
"We are going to have a complete government takeover of our health care system faster than you can say, `this is making me sick,'" jabbed Rep. Candice Miller, R-Mich., adding that Democrats were intent on passing "a jobs-killing, tax-hiking, deficit-exploding" bill.
But with little doubt about the outcome, the rhetoric lacked the fire of last summer's town hall meetings, when some critics accused Democrats of plotting "death panels" to hasten the demise of senior citizens.
The bill is projected to expand coverage to 36 million uninsured, resulting in 96 percent of the nation's eligible population having insurance.
To pay for the expansion of coverage, the bill cuts Medicare's projected spending by more than $400 billion over a decade. It also imposes a tax surcharge of 5.4 percent on income over $500,000 in the case of individuals and $1 million for families.
The bill was estimated to reduce federal deficits by about $104 billion over a decade, although it lacked two of the key cost-cutting provisions under consideration in the Senate, and its longer-term impact on government red ink was far from clear.
Democrats lined up a range of outside groups behind their legislation, none more important than the AARP, whose support promises political cover against the cuts to Medicare in next year's congressional elections.
The nation's drug companies generally support health care overhaul. And while the powerful insurance industry opposed the legislation, it did so quietly, and the result was that Republicans could not count on the type of advertising campaign that might have peeled away skittish Democrats in swing districts.
Over all, the bill envisioned the most sweeping set of changes to the health care system in more than a generation, and Democrats said it marked the culmination of a campaign that Harry Truman began when he sat in the White House 60 years ago.
Debate on the House floor had already begun when Obama strode into a closed-door meeting of the Democratic rank and file across the street from the Capitol to make a final personal appeal to them to pass his top domestic priority.
Later, in an appearance at the White House, he said he had told lawmakers, "to rise to this moment. Answer the call of history, and vote yes for health insurance reform for America."
It appeared that a compromise brokered Friday night on the volatile issue of abortion had finally secured the votes needed to pass the legislation.
As drafted, the measure denied the use of federal subsidies to purchase abortion coverage in policies sold by private insurers in the new insurance exchange, except in cases of incest, rape or when the life of the mother was in danger.
But abortion foes won far stronger restrictions that would rule out abortion coverage except in those three categories in any government-sold plan. It would also ban abortion coverage in any private plan purchased by consumers receiving federal subsidies.
Disappointed Democratic abortion rights supporters grumbled about the turn of events, but pulled back quickly from any thought of opposing the health care bill in protest.
One, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., detailed numerous other benefits for women in the bill, including free medical preventive services and better prescription drug coverage under Medicare. "Women need health care reform," she concluded in remarks on the House floor.
A Republican alternative was rejected on a near party line vote of 258-176.
It relied heavily on loosening regulations on private insurers to reduce costs for those who currently have insurance, in some cases by as much as 10 percent. But congressional budget analysts said the plan would make no dent in the ranks of the uninsured, an assessment that highlighted the difference in priorities between the two political parties.

Patrick Swayze

Publicist: Patrick Swayze dies at 57Associated Press - 43 minutes ago

Swayze's publicist Annett Wolf says the 57-year-old 'Dirty Dancing' actor died Monday, Sept. 14, 2009, after a nearly two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. (AP Photo/Lefteris Pitarakis, file)Associated Press
LOS ANGELES - Patrick Swayze, the hunky actor who danced his way into viewers' hearts with "Dirty Dancing" and then broke them with "Ghost," died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.
"Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," said a statement released Monday evening by his publicist, Annett Wolf. No other details were given.
Fans of the actor were saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer.
He had kept working despite the diagnosis, putting together a memoir with his wife and shooting "The Beast," an A&E drama series for which he had already made the pilot. It drew a respectable 1.3 million viewers when the 13 episodes ran in 2009, but A&E said it had reluctantly decided not to renew it for a second season.
Swayze said he opted not to use painkilling drugs while making "The Beast" because they would have taken the edge off his performance. He acknowledged that time might be running out given the grim nature of the disease.
When he first went public with the illness, some reports gave him only weeks to live, but his doctor said his situation was "considerably more optimistic" than that.
"I'd say five years is pretty wishful thinking," Swayze told ABC's Barbara Walters in early 2009. "Two years seems likely if you're going to believe statistics. I want to last until they find a cure, which means I'd better get a fire under it."
A three-time Golden Globe nominee, Swayze became a star with his performance as the misunderstood bad-boy Johnny Castle in "Dirty Dancing." As the son of a choreographer who began his career in musical theater, he seemed a natural to play the role.
A coming-of-age romance starring Jennifer Grey as an idealistic young woman on vacation with her family and Swayze as the Catskills resort's sexy (and much older) dance instructor, the film made great use of both his grace on his feet and his muscular physique.
It became an international phenomenon in the summer of 1987, spawning albums, an Oscar-winning hit song in "(I've Had) the Time of My Life," stage productions and a sequel, 2004's "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights," in which he made a cameo.
Swayze performed and co-wrote a song on the soundtrack, the ballad "She's Like the Wind," inspired by his wife, Lisa Niemi. The film also gave him the chance to utter the now-classic line, "Nobody puts Baby in a corner."
And it allowed him to poke fun at himself on a "Saturday Night Live" episode, in which he played a wannabe Chippendales dancer alongside the corpulent and frighteningly shirtless Chris Farley.
A major crowdpleaser, the film drew only mixed reviews from critics, though Vincent Canby wrote in The New York Times, "Given the limitations of his role, that of a poor but handsome sex-object abused by the rich women at Kellerman's Mountain House, Mr. Swayze is also good. ... He's at his best -- as is the movie -- when he's dancing."
Swayze followed that up with the 1989 action flick "Road House," in which he played a bouncer at a rowdy bar. But it was his performance in 1990's "Ghost" that showed his vulnerable, sensitive side. He starred as a murdered man trying to communicate with his fiancee (Demi Moore) -- with great frustration and longing -- through a psychic played by Whoopi Goldberg.
Swayze said at the time that he fought for the role of Sam Wheat (director Jerry Zucker wanted Kevin Kline) but once he went in for an audition and read six scenes, he got it.
Why did he want the part so badly? "It made me cry four or five times," he said of Bruce Joel Rubin's Oscar-winning script in an AP interview.
"Ghost" provided yet another indelible musical moment: Swayze and Moore sensually molding pottery together to the strains of the Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody." It also earned a best-picture nomination and a supporting-actress Oscar for Goldberg, who said she wouldn't have won if it weren't for Swayze.
"When I won my Academy Award, the only person I really thanked was Patrick," Goldberg said in March 2008 on the ABC daytime talk show "The View."
Swayze himself earned three Golden Globe nominations, for "Dirty Dancing," "Ghost" and 1995's "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar," which further allowed him to toy with his masculine image. The role called for him to play a drag queen on a cross-country road trip alongside Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo.
His heartthrob status almost kept him from being considered for the role of Vida Boheme.
"I couldn't get seen on it because everyone viewed me as terminally heterosexually masculine-macho," he told the AP then. But he transformed himself so completely that when his screen test was sent to Steven Spielberg, whose Amblin pictures produced "To Wong Foo," Spielberg didn't recognize him.
Among his earlier films, Swayze was part of the star-studded lineup of up-and-comers in Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 adaptation of S.E. Hinton's novel "The Outsiders," alongside Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez and Diane Lane. Swayze played Darrel "Dary" Curtis, the oldest of three wayward brothers -- and essentially the father figure -- in a poor family in small-town Oklahoma.
Other '80s films included "Red Dawn," "Grandview U.S.A." (for which he also provided choreography) and "Youngblood," once more with Lowe, as Canadian hockey teammates.
In the '90s, he made such eclectic films as "Point Break" (1991), in which he played the leader of a band of bank-robbing surfers, and the family Western "Tall Tale" (1995), in which he starred as Pecos Bill. He appeared on the cover of People magazine as its "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1991, but his career tapered off toward the end of the 1990s, when he also had stay in rehab for alcohol abuse. In 2001, he appeared in the cult favorite "Donnie Darko," and in 2003 he returned to the New York stage with "Chicago"; 2006 found him in the musical "Guys and Dolls" in London.
Swayze was born in 1952 in Houston, the son of Jesse Swayze and choreographer Patsy Swayze, whose films include "Urban Cowboy."
He played football but also was drawn to dance and theater, performing with the Feld, Joffrey and Harkness Ballets and appearing on Broadway as Danny Zuko in "Grease." But he turned to acting in 1978 after a series of injuries.
Within a couple years of moving to Los Angeles, he made his debut in the roller-disco movie "Skatetown, U.S.A." The eclectic cast included Scott Baio, Flip Wilson, Maureen McCormack and Billy Barty.
Swayze had a couple of movies in the works when his diagnosis was announced, including the drama "Powder Blue," starring Jessica Biel, Forest Whitaker and his younger brother, Don, which was scheduled for release this year.
Off-screen, he was an avid conservationist who was moved by his time in Africa to shine a light on "man's greed and absolute unwillingness to operate according to Mother Nature's laws," he told the AP in 2004.
Swayze was married since 1975 to Niemi, a fellow dancer who took lessons with his mother; they met when he was 19 and she was 15. A licensed pilot, Niemi would fly her husband from Los Angeles to Northern California for treatment at Stanford University Medical Center, People magazine reported in a cover story.
