Join a committed group of teachers, community activists, parents and students to provide an alternative to the destruction of our school communities. Strengthening the County Health System
With Candidates for Cook County Board President
Tuesday, January 12 from 6 to 7:30 PM

The future of the County Health System and the independent board that oversees it promise to be critical issues for the Cook County Board, and for the County President’s race. An independent board was created year ago, with those selected to the governing board asked to restore public faith in a vital public system. Board president Todd Stroger and those who will be challenging him for his seat will be asked to define their visions for a better and more efficient county health system. The forum will be moderated by journalist Phil Kadner from the Southtown Star and will be held at the First United Methodist Church at the Chicago Temple, located at 77 W. Founded in 1923 by a group of citizens concern about the growing influence of the Capone mob, the Better Government Association (BGA) is an independent, non-partisan government watchdog group committed to fighting waste, corruption and inefficiency in government. Cook County Board President Candidate Forum

As voters, we need to know that the Cook County Board President will be committed to addressing the issue of violence against women and girls in our community. The Candidate Forum will provide the public with an opportunity to discuss issues related to violence against women with the candidates running for Cook County Board President in the upcoming primary election. After each candidate has spoken, audience members will have an opportunity to ask their own questions. The Candidate Forum is a nonpartisan event. Future Measures: How to Calculate - for a World Without Oil?

Timothy Mitchell is Professor of Arabic Studies at Columbia University. He is a political theorist who studies the political economy of the Middle East, the political role of economics and other forms of expert knowledge, the politics of large-scale technical systems, and the place of colonialism in the making of modernity. His current research brings together the fields of STS (science and technology studies) and postcolonial theory in a project on "Carbon Democracy," which examines the history of fossil fuels and the possibilities for democratic politics that were expanded or closed down in the construction of modern energy networks. This free lecture will be held at UIC's Institute for the Humanities, located at 701 S. Morgan St., in Stevenson Hall.
