All Chicago-based artists are invited to submit a design for one of twelve murals that will grace the CTA and Metra underpasses in the 49th Ward. The "Mass Underpass Murals Project" was one of the funding proposals that received voter approval in the Participatory Budgeting Election last April in which I gave the 49th Ward residents the power to determine how I would spend the 49th Ward's capital budget allocation. Eligible artists for the Mass Underpass Murals Project must either live in Chicago or have a studio located in Chicago. Near South Parking Study
On June 15, the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) and 2nd Ward Alderman Bob Fioretti hosted a community meeting at Columbia College to present the long-awaited results of the Near South Parking Study - SUMMARY. The area covered by the study is bounded by Congress Parkway on the north, Lakeshore Drive on the east, the Stevenson Expressway on the south, Clark Street on the west from the Stevenson to 16th Street, and the Chicago River from 16th street to Congress Parkway.
Among the Study’s findings were that a total of 4,400 on-street parking spaces and 35,000 off-street parking spaces are available within the study area. These parking spaces were divided up between metered, residential permit, free, parking garage and surface lot spaces. With about 50 people in attendance, a number of questions were asked and a number of concerns were raised, especially over some of the tentative recommendations that were made in the study.

Page three (3) of the above attached SUMMARY of the study is a comment form. You will notice that a deadline of “no later than June 29, 2010” to submit “questions, statements, and opinions” about this study is written on the comment form. Please note that a subsequent email that I received from Mr. Richard Hazlett, who is listed on the comment form as the contact for CDOT, stated that comments can be sent in “when they are available,” this in response to my email to Mr. Hazlett asking for more time for people to be able to send in comments about this study.
Please also note that the Greater South Loop Association will be hosting a community meeting on Saturday, July 17 starting at 9 AM (see event listing below) in which a CDOT representative will again present the results of the Near South Parking Study. See you then.

For the first time in a decade, the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) is opening its Family Housing Wait List. This is the list used to fill rental units as they become available in CHA-owned properties across the city. There will be 40,000 families selected by lottery for CHA’s Family Wait List. The lottery will be conducted after the four-week registration period. Those selected for the Wait List will be considered for housing as it becomes available. Registration for the lottery will take place between June 14, 2010 and July 9, 2010. No registrations will be accepted before or after these dates.

Preschool Program
South Loop School Tuition-Based Preschool program is still accepting applications for the 2010-11 School Year. Given the nearly $87.2 billion lost to congestion every year and more than 4.2 billion hours squandered by motorists stuck in traffic annually, the federal government has been testing several programs nationwide to combat the bottlenecks choking American cities. Jeffrey Lindley will discuss the congestion reduction strategies being considered by the Federal Highway Administration and provide some insight regarding the opportunities regions can expect to see from the next federal surface transportation bill to help relieve the economic strain caused by congestion. Nick Thompson will give an in-depth look at Minnesota’s success with congestion pricing techniques along two major highways and highlight the building blocks that have led to a reduction in traffic. Finally, Kristi Lafleur will discuss ways the Illinois Tollway is working to address the Chicago region's congestion problems. On June 28, the Supreme Court delivered a blow to gun control advocates with a 5-4 ruling against Chicago’s firearm ban. The decision in McDonald vs. City of Chicago upheld that the “right to bear arms” was indeed an individual liberty not to be infringed upon by any state or municipality. This decision leaves many to wonder: who are the beneficiaries of this ruling and who stands to lose? What is the future of gun rights advocacy? What does this all mean for the City of Chicago? Its 28 year-old gun ban has done little to curb violence; in fact, a recent weekend saw a startling 50 casualties. A number of Chicagoans view the lift as encouraging more gun purchases, which can only exacerbate the violence. In a post-ruling editorial, the Chicago Sun-Times noted, “Studies have shown that the more guns there are in the home, the more likely accidental shootings by (and of) children, and domestic arguments that end with somebody being shot dead.” On the other hand, perhaps the ruling, though condemned by Mayor Daley, will yield new, more effective innovations in gun control. Chicago city officials promise to make it harder for individuals to gain access to handguns by potentially including regulations on licensing and sales as well as training requirements. A Letter to Three Wives (1949) is based on a novel by John Klempner. His novel was entitled A Letter to Five Wives. Writer-director Joseph L. Mankiewicz thought the novel was too long and would be difficult to transfer to the screen. So, he shortened it to four wives and then shortened it again to three. The plot revolves around three wives who, just before going on a boat ride and picnic with some disadvantaged children, receive a letter from a society friend named Addie Ross. In the letter, Addie says she's run off with one of their husbands. While the women spend the afternoon volunteering, each looks back on her marriage and wonders if hers is the husband who ran off with Addie.
